Introduction to the August Edition: “Frogman’s Friends”
by Blake Sanders, Graphic Impressions Coordinator
Welcome readers to this Frogman’s-centric issue of Graphic Impressions. 2026 marks the 45 anniversary of Frogman’s Print Workshops. From humble beginnings in the Black Hills, to its current fabulous home at the University of Iowa, Frogman’s has been a world class print education destination for generations. I attended and assisted for eight years during its long tenure at the University of South Dakota. I have fond memories of printmakers working hard during the day and effectively taking over little Vermillion in the evenings. Along the way I made lifelong friends, and learned from some of the best print educators in the field.
It was an honor when Jeremy Menard, Frogman’s Director and son of the Frogman himself, asked my partner and I to teach a quilted print workshop in 2017, when the workshops were at University of Nebraska Omaha. Our recent move to northern Iowa means the workshops are tantalizingly close, so I took the opportunity to view the exhibitions, visit friends, and interview Nathan Meltz for the journal. The rest of this issue grew organically out of the inspiring pilgrimage. All it cost me was a practically sleepless night when I was convinced to stay out for karaoke, a Frogman’s tradition!
Please enjoy and excuse my indulgence. Next summer we will feature others of the outstanding print-centric workshops and residencies. Have a favorite? Want to be our reporter in residence? Please reach out!
