Heather Muise: Iconic

Artist Statement

Heather Muise’s work draws from a wide range of visual and historical sources, including alchemical texts and woodcuts, prison tattoos, tarot cards, and other arcane systems of imagery. Through these sources, Muise explores ideas of magic, divination, transformation, fate, and possibilities that may or may not exist within our world. Rather than constructing a direct narrative, she uses symbolic imagery to create suggestion and ambiguity. Familiar objects and recognizable signs are brought together in ways that encourage viewers to make their own connections, following associations that may feel intuitive and even contradictory.

Muise is currently developing a series of prints using etching and aquatint techniques that draw upon imagery from her environment, dreams, and natural disasters.
