About the Artist

Brittany Gorelick (she/they) received their MFA from Kent State University in Print Media and Photography and their BFA from the University of North Florida in Drawing Painting and Printmaking. Their work has been shown across the United States, including the Morgan Paper Conservatory and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in CT, internationally she has been included in group shows both in Germany and Nicaragua. Brittany is currently Assistant Professor of Printmaking at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.

Artist Statement

Maybe She’s Born With It, Maybe It’s Neurodivergency is an homage to my lived experience as a Queer-Neurodivergent individual navigating a world that was not made for me. This body of work takes on many forms, including site reactive installations. This work challenges the hegemonic notion of ‘normalcy’ and opens up a dialogue about the oppressive structures that we live within and are confined by.

I impart the meaning of the grid as a symbol for neurotypicality, white supremacy, heteronormativity, and patriarchy. Alongside the grid is a hieroglyph of my own creation, a tight yet explosive gestural mark, a visual metaphor for my neurodivergent physical, mental and emotional discomfort. Combining these seemingly oppositional forms, I disrupt the grid visually and physically through a variety of print and papermaking processes.

A large intaglio print assemblage. This print is a grid comprised of multiple small scribbles or “marks”. Collaged atop the grid is handmade paper and chemigrams of the inverted intaglio print.

Horizontal screenprint on white paper comprised of many layers of dayglo ink. Pink scribbles in a grid take up the right half of the print while the right has two layers of distorted square grids with scribbles inside of them overlapping in pink and black. An orange layer takes up the top of the print.

A long horizontal print in bright pink on white paper comprised of two layers. One layer is a thin grid cut in a wave pattern, the top later is a collagraph. The collagraph is a shaped plate, with a square grid with scribbles inside of each square, they are distorted and look as if they have been dragged across a scanner.

Horizontal screenprint on white paper comprised of many layers of distorted wave patterns. Two layers of wavy pink are on the top and bottom, leaving the center white with a lighter pink wave. Scribbles placed in a 1” x 1” grid pattern are printed in purple across the entire page. A transparent blue layer goes from left to right of a distorted square grids with scribbles inside.
