Artist Statement
My work explores the personal and political. Utilizing mediums such as bookmaking, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, I digest and interrogate the systems working around me. From structures of identification to root systems, I am specifically highlighting moments of mundanity and intimacy as illustrative of these greater structures. I am primarily drawn to examine systems of sex and masculinity, working within the tension and contrast to interrogate dominant systems of power. I work to reveal through appropriation of imagery and aesthetics; when stills are taken from a boxing match, you find an embrace. These points of contact are where I find most inspiration. Integral to my making process is collection, of found objects and images allowing me to repurpose existing narratives through contrast or conversation.
Lived experience defines my practice, what I am interrogating in myself tends to come out in my work whether I like it or not. I am interested in what is revealed unconsciously, what do I want to hide? What am I running away from? What makes me embarrassed?
